What is really
small and cosy town is Balaklava! It's located on both sides of very curved bay on
South-East part of Sevastopol. It is pretty old town - there are ruins of Genova's
fortress built in XV century, Greek people lived there, during Crimean War it was a base
of British army.
During Soviet time it was most secret and close point in Crimea because it was a base for
Soviet submarines. Even when Sevastopol, was open city, Balaklava was still close and
people had to have special permission to get there.
Soviet military made a big tunnel through a mountain and built a very secret
submarine repair factory inside the mountain with access from the Black Sea. The tunnel is
still exisit but it is dark and empty from any equipment - people destroyed and stole
everything they could.
It's possible to get into the tunnel if you hire a small boat which will get you across
the harbor. You can still see some military ships and a Ukrainian submarine.
