Inkerman is a small
town beside Sevastopol. It is located at the end of the largest North arm of the harbor.
You will pass it when you go to Sevastopol from Simferopol. There is a cave-monastery
named "Sank-Klimenty's".
There is a legend about this, a first Pope spent many years there in a prison-quarry and
had to cut a rock. With God's help, he made three cave-churches and founded the monastery.
On the rock above the monastery the fortress Kalamita was built in XV century. For years
and years the fortress got very old and it is only ruins now. The monastery was closed and
destroyed during Soviet times as many another churches and
monasteries all over Soviet Union were. It was started to be renovated after the
perestroyka, and now it is in service again. You can get direct into the Valley of Death
which goes till Balaklava from Inkerman. |
